Customer Review: Finder Scope Doesn't Find

I gave the Celestron FirstScopeCelestron 21024 FirstScope Telescope to my grandniece and grandnephew for Christmas and was delighted at their delight at getting their first glimpse of stars and the moon with more than their naked eyes. Because the reviewer in Sky & Telescope had recommended adding a finder scope to the FirstScope, I bought the one that Celestron offered. I was disappointed. It provided perfectly good optics and a fine cross hair, but aligning it with the 3" FirstScope proved very tricky; and once aligned it was very, very easy to knock it out of alignment. I had better success finding sky objects, Messier 31 and the Pleiades specifically, using my own unassisted eyes than the finderscope. I appreciate that one shouldn't expect a lot from a less than $20 finderscope, but a slightly different design, that shouldn't greatly increase the costs, is possible. I'd strongly recommend Celestron make the effort. Until then, do buy the FirstScope. It can give a great introduction to the delights of astronomy to the uninitiated, young and old.
