Customer Review: A good microscope but requires a little patients!!

I purchased this little microscope to review quality aspects of very small manufactured products at work. I have installed it on a Windows XP desktop PC and on a Windows 7 Professional Laptop. The microscope is "Plug & Play" and it installed instantly on both operating systems with no problems. The install was performed by the operating systems similar to the way thumb drives are installed. I installed the software on both computers after connecting the camera, having the operating systems install the "Plug & Play" software for the camera, and then dis-connecting the camera by pulling the USB connector out of the USB port. That is the only way I found to disconnect it. It does not disconnect like a thumb drive. The XP software came on a disk with the camera. The Windows 7 software had to be downloaded from the manufacturer's web site. Both software packages installed very fast and there were no problems with either install. After the software was installed, I reconnected the microscope, opened the software, and the microscope went right to work. The software works very well on both computers. The only big issue I have is that the light from the 6 built in USB LED lights is not adjustable and you may have to move the camera around somewhat to get a good view with good contrast - especially with metallic or high gloss targets. The pictures are jpeg and the file sizes are large enough to be edited with a good picture editing software. I was surprised at just how good I could make them with enhancements. There are a lot of options on the size and shapes of the pictures you can take with the camera within the software. The camera also can record pretty good wmv format video with sound in a 640 X 480 format.
Learning to use the camera takes a little practice and a lot of patients. The stand it mounts on is small but well made. It allows the camera to be moved in many different directions but the range of motion is pretty small.
The magnification range is found by a combination of manual and somewhat tedious height adjustment with the stand and adjusting the focus wheel to move within the 10X to 40X focal range. The 150X power is fixed. The image can only be sharply focused manually and must be done carefully because the way the stand is designed, the camera can move out of focal range without warning requiring additional manual manipulation to get it back in range of the focus control.
I would recommend the camera and I am planning on purchasing another one. It takes a while to develope a good technique for using the camera but it does a pretty good job once you learn how to use it with the software.
