Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Celestron Ultima Series 12.5MM OcularCustomer Review: Extremely superb eyepiece.. Summary: 5 Stars
As an amateur astronomer, you make certain eyepiece decisions as the years pass, and hopefully end up with as fine a set of eyepieces as possible. All this unfortunately, before you actually have a real grasp regarding each eyepiece type. But with the Celestron Ultima eyepiece series, I am at this point utterly proud in the realization that I do own three of these magnificent gems, the 12.5 mm being the last one acquired.
I obtained the 12.5 mm one after some painstaking searching for it's availability during the 2006 Christmas holiday season. I use it primarily in my piggyback Onyx refractor for observing. I literally was unprepared for the sharpness of the star fields that I was seeing in the Onyx ED. Tiny pinpoint stars, clean binary star separations, magnificent Messier object observations, etc.
I think there is a bit of anxiety among amateur astronomers about the Ultima series in the fact that most models in the series have been discontinued. If you want to get a real feel for the desirability of these eyepieces, just check out a site like AstroMart, and see how many people are trying to unload these babies! All you will see for this series is the word 'Wanted', not the usual 'For Sale' message.
These are the greatest eyepieces that I can imagine having, other than of course a more expensive eyepiece like a Pentax, of which I own two.
The coatings, the build quality, the optical quality, and, oh yes, the realization that a 52 degree AFOV is more than adequate!
The only consolation for me concerning the discontinuation of this series was finding out that Antares Ultimas are essentially the same series, and are still available. I will be getting the 25mm, 20mm, and 15mm Antares Ultimas very soon, and oh yes, they will be parfocal with my Celestron Ultimas.
I just hope that Celestron brings this beautiful eyepiece series back some day. If that happens, there may just be fewer of us amateur astronomers groping with eyepiece anxiety in the dark under the stars!
